How To Do A Trend Micro "Housecall" Scan
This is a very long scan and there are a few steps to doing this but you can do it and it is worth the effort. Read this whole page through before you begin. It may look like a lot to do but it is not that much and it is easy. (You may want to print this page, and (mentally) check things off as you go. It also makes it easier to read, without having another Window opened.)
Housecall has 3 steps to it. The longest step is Step 1 and may take up to 1 hour from the time you get it started til you go to step 2 cause it actually scans your files and folders during this step. :-).
"Step 1: Preparing to scan the computer".
"Step 2: Scanning local computer andd connected components".
"step 3: Listing and removing detected infections and vulnerabilities".
To start, Close all other Windows and click
HERE. It will take you to a Trend Micro page that has "Housecall" near the top in red letters.
Click the button that says: "Check my PC now".
Underneath the "Feature Overview" tick (put a check mark in it) the "Yes, I accept..." box and click the "Launch Housecall" button".
It will then "test" your computer to see if it can run it's scan. If it says the test was successful, you want to use the "Java-based Housecall kernel" so click the "Starting Housecall >>" button under those words.
It will now "prepare to scan your computer" and once that is finished click the "Next >>" button underneath "Scan Complete computer for malware, grayware and vulnerabilities".
You may hear a few "beeps" after it refreshes the page and then it will begin to scan. If you have the time and inclination, the sales pitch for "PC-illin" is kinda interesting though I wouldn't buy it myself.
*Do not pay any attention to the amount of minutes it says above the white box with the dotted red line in it. I believe it marks the progress of each stage of the scan (there are several stages) and not the overall scan.*
Once Step 1 is completed and tells you all the things it found, tick the "Clean all detected Infectons automatically" circle and then click the "Clean now >>" button.
If a box pops up and asks if you want to delete the files it found, click "OK".
Once it cleans your computer, a box will pop up asking if you want to run the scan again. If you click "OK" then the scan it will start again by itself without going through all steps you went through in the beginning but it will still take about 30 to 45 minutes to scan your computer again.
Sometimes I scan again and sometimes I don't and it is up to you but what most folks don't know about these type scans (the Symantec Virus scan included) is that if it detects certain types of malware the scan will abort right then cause some 'malicious software' are programmed to rewrite itself into another file if it gets detected so the scan will stop immediately to prevent that.
